Abaco

Abaco is a chain of islands located in the northeastern Bahamas about 180 miles east of South Florida. Abaco and its cays are scattered over 130 square miles making it the second largest island in The Bahamas, best known as a yachtsman’s paradise. Two major islands, Great and Little Abaco are world famous for their aquamarine waters.

Great Abaco Island is home to Marsh Harbour that features several marinas, small resort hotels, waterfront restaurants and a wide variety of shops and stores. The off-lying cays are separated from the mainland by the protected Sea of Abaco, which is ideal for sailing, cruising, fishing, snorkeling and swimming. Ferry services connect Great Abaco with the outer cays, where rental homes, resorts, and beautiful beaches on islands such as Elbow Cay (Hope Town), Great Guana Cay, Green Turtle Cay and many others offer great vacation spots for those who love sea, sand and sun. Located 17 miles north-west of Marsh Harbour, Treasure Cay is a developed residential and vacation community. Its sugar-soft white sand and sparkling diamond and turquoise waters help rank this four-mile beach as one of the world’s top 10 beaches.

On September 1, 2019, Hurricane Dorian made landfall on Elbow Cay in the Abaco Islands leaving nothing less but a devastation behind. The strong sense of belonging and togetherness has joined the efforts of Bahamian nationals and residents supported by many international organizations and groups who have started the long process of rebuilding these beautiful islands.
